Assonet (02702) is Freetown’s historic village — the common, the riverfront, and streets that run out toward Profile Rock and the edge of the Freetown-Fall River State Forest. It sits barely six miles from our shop, straight down the river.
Living against 5,000 acres of state forest is the best thing about Assonet and the defining fact about its lawns: forest soil, forest shade at the edges, and forest wildlife — ticks very much included.
Yards cut from oak-pine woods start acidic and stay that way without help — pine needles and oak leaves re-acidify soil every fall. Assonet lawns almost universally need a real lime program, retested and adjusted over the first couple of years. Get pH right and every later application suddenly works like the label promised.
The historic streets around the common have settled, compacted village soil under old trees — aeration-and-overseed territory. The newer lots toward the forest line fight acidity and shade edges instead. Same village, two playbooks; a walkthrough usually tells us which one your yard follows, and a soil test can confirm it if you’d like.
The Assonet River bend keeps village mornings damp — great for seed germination, friendly to fungus. Lawns near the water get scouted for red thread in June and brown patch in humid August stretches, and we feed them to outgrow disease rather than spraying after the fact. Uphill toward the forest line, drought stress replaces damp as the summer story.
Bordering the state forest means deer ticks from May to October, full stop. Dense mowed turf with a crisp edge against brush is real protection for the part of the property your family actually uses, and a mowed or mulched buffer where lawn meets forest adds real separation. Much of Freetown runs on private wells, so we build lawns that don’t depend on the sprinkler: aeration for absorption, slow-release feeding, potassium before heat, mowing at 3.5 inches. An inch a week including rain — delivered deep and early — carries a program lawn through a normal summer.
Oak leaf-out runs a touch later against the forest, so spring applications follow the woods, not the calendar — pre-emergent when the understory greens, first feeding once soil wakes. Fall is prime time: aeration and overseeding in September, the final feeding after the oaks drop in November. We route Assonet with Berkley, so timing never waits on a drive.
